2.7. Liquid level in automatic transmission

GENERAL INFORMATION

Liquid level in automatic transmission should be checked and supported systematically. Insufficient level of liquid involves pro-slipping of details of transmission and decrease in road performance of the car. At excess level there is a foaming which is followed by loss of liquid and an exit of transmission out of operation.

It is necessary to check liquid level in automatic transmission after warming up of liquid up to the working temperature. Liquid is considered the heated-up ambassador of a trip in the usual mode on distance of 16 km (or 24 km at cold weather), and temperature of liquid from 70 to 80 °C. After a trip under trying conditions (long driving with a high speed, towage, a trip in city conditions in hot weather) wait not less than 30 min.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Install the car on the flat horizontal platform, turn on the emergency brake, start the engine and transfer to an operating mode idling. Press a pedal of a brake and translate the selector lever from situation P through all range of transfers to extreme situation and again return to situation P.
2. Get the control probe (it is specified by an arrow) (the engine continues to idle) and check the level and a condition of liquid.
3. Wipe the probe with pure rags, again insert the probe against the stop into a flange. Get the probe and check liquid level.
4. If level was checked on cold liquid, then it has to be between tags of Cold or Cool if liquid is heated-up, then level has to be between Hot tags. If level is near the lower tags, then add liquid of the recommended brand through a funnel.
5. Add only necessary amount of liquid, without exceeding admissible level. To finish level from the lower mark to top about about 0,5 l of liquid are necessary (if liquid hot). Add liquid in very small portions, periodically checking level.
6. If liquid of black or dark brown color, or extends a "burned" smell, then it needs to be replaced. At a doubtful state compare fresh liquid with fulfilled on color and a smell.
